Introduction

If you have found my blog, you are likely someone who has been diagnosed with insulin resistance or have a loved one who has been diagnosed and are looking for more answers. While scouring the internet for information, you will likely find single blog posts or articles discussing insulin resistance. You can also find books through Amazon.com or at Barnes and Noble that are dedicated to learning about insulin resistance. However, in my experience, the articles and blog posts all say the same thing and the books talk scientifically about what insulin resistance in, yet give very little help in how to overcome the life changes that you will have to face in order to manage this condition and to prevent it from progressing into much bigger health complications. My hope for this blog is to be a one-stop shop for people who have questions about coping with insulin resistance and need ideas on what to do. I am not an expert, nor am I a doctor or a nutritionist/dietitian. This is merely from my perspective on things that work for me, so be sure to continue to work with your doctors and nutritionists to make sure that you are on a good path for yourself.

You are probably wondering, "Who is this person, anyway?" My name is Caitlin, I am almost 24 years old, and I was diagnosed with insulin resistance and hypoglycemia in May of this year. The past few years have been really crazy for me: I was diagnosed with endometriosis, had a surgery to correct that, and was diagnosed with interstitial cystitis a year later. I have struggled with depression for years, so I went to see one of my mom's doctors who did some blood tests on me to see if there could be a reason for it. After my results came in, I was diagnosed with insulin resistance, hypoglycemia, dyslipidemia (abnormal amount of fat/cholesterol in blood), and deficiencies in Vitamin D, Vitamin B-12 and omega-3 levels. Basically, I am at risk for cardiovascular heart disease and diabetes if I don't get things under control.

I met with an dietitian/personal trainer to come up with a plan to get everything under control. We worked out some goals for me to work towards: 1.) Walk my dog for at least 20 minutes every day, and add in 30-45 minutes of resistance training, yoga, and/or pilates four days a week, 2.) drink 64 oz of water daily, and 3.) use the plate method for each meal with the idea that carbohydrates should be limited at each meal. I will talk about these individually in future posts.

I've only been working on this for a couple of weeks now, but I hope to share my experiences with you and to provide you with knowledge that can help you in your own journeys. For now, I bid thee adieu and I look forward to taking this journey with you.
